You’ve got an idea for a book.
Maybe a few notes on characters and plot.
Maybe an outline on your computer.
Perhaps a scene or two written down.
The only problem is, you're worried. You know that the first few scenes are critical to pulling a reader into your story.
The Hook is a developmental editing service that helps you craft the beginning of a novel or memoir that readers won't be able to put down.
How The Hook Works
The Hook is a five week long service for writers who are in the early stages of writing a first draft manuscript. It’s designed to help you get clear on the kind of story that you want to tell, avoid common mistakes authors make in beginning their books, and establish (or reinforce) writing habits that help you become a better writer. Here's a breakdown of what happens each week.
In week one, you complete the pre-work. Pre-work is a set of questions that will help us get clear about what genre your story fits into and how to build on any scenes you’ve already written.
In week two, we have two one hour phone calls. In the first call, we’ll focus on your overall story. We'll discuss your primary genre and what readers expect from that genre. We’ll also review any existing scenes and craft a three sentence description of your whole book. In the second call, we'll create a working outline of your first 12-15 scenes, and a detailed plan for your next scene. Then, you’ll write your assigned scene and send it back to me for review.
Weeks Three & Four
In weeks three and four, we'll have a one hour phone call where we go your assigned scene from the previous week. We’ll talk about any needed revisions to that scene and make a plan for what should happen in your next scene. Then, you’ll write your assigned scene and send it back to me for review.
In week five, we'll have our final one hour phone call. We'll review your scene from week four and revisit the working outline of your first 12-15 scenes from week two. After our final call, you’ll receive a Next Steps Recommendation Letter that summarizes everything we’ve discussed on our phone consultations, and includes the updated outline for completing the first 12-15 scenes of your manuscript.
By the end of The Hook, you’ll have three completed scenes, a working outline for the first 12-15 scenes of your manuscript, five hours of recordings about your story (I record all our calls), and a plan for writing a killer beginning to your book.
